I think you will find this is one of the finest 03A3 that you will see. The condition is excellent , close to new, and may well be entirely original. This walked into a gun shop in the beginning of March this year. Still in the original 1961 dated DCM/NRA shipping box still packed in grease wrap, packed with original packing cosmoline. The rifle barrel has been cleaned to to check condition. Stock and metal have been wiped off. It was necessary to disassemble the bolt. It contained so much grease that it retarded movement of the firing pin when the trigger was pulled. Pictures of the bolt still wrapped in grease wrap and prior to cleaning are shown. The rifle is in about new condition. It retains 99 to 100% parkerize finish on the barrel, receiver, and trigger guard. Mechanical condition and rifled barrel are as new. The rifled barrel gauges 1 for throat erosion and 1 for muzzle erosion. Both measurements are considered in the new range. The rifling is complete, bright, not marked or pitted across its entire length. It has serial number 4122735 on the receiver. The top of the barrel is correctly stamped RA 10-43 with original flaming bomb proof. Additionally there is a P stamp on the underside of the barrel between the muzzle and front band. This should be on any original issued rifle. All parts look to have original R stamp where expected. Trigger guards were not generally given an R stamp however the profile of a Smith Corona 03A3 was slightly different on the bottom. This rifle has a correct Remington trigger guard. The stock is original and in excellent condition. It has has correct original proofs on the left side opposite the bolt handle. These are RA Crossed Canons enclosed in a circle and FJA. These are the original time of production, proofs of the WW2 era at Remington. The bottom side of the stock has a correct original single P firing proof enclosed in a circle. Again WW2 correct. Also visible in front of the trigger guard on the stock are a series of sub assembly proofs. These are rarely seen. They were generally struck somewhat more lightly and were more prone to loss from handling wear or carding the stock when it was cleaned in service. The stock also has 2 small post war arsenal proofs on the side of the butt. These indicate it was returned to an arsenal at the conclusion of WW2. Rifles returned could either just be given a proof if still in excellent condition, or if needed a complete refinish and parts changed. There is never a guarantee a rifle with a post war proof was not changed or rebuilt. There are indicators you can look for in an original rifle. Refinished rifles generally present a more uniform color of parkeriving. On this rifle you will note that the rear sight, bands, magazine cut off, bolt knob, safety, firing pin and a few other parts have a dark blue park finish not the green cast that is on the barrel and receiver. Much more common on an rifle that has not been refinished. Other indicators. Note the bolt collar has an original R stamp. Not at all common on a rebuilt or refinished rifle. Both the bands and front swivels are blue and the swivels are R stamped. Note the screws securing the bands. There are correct original hollow head screws that still have peened heads to prevent complete removal of the band screw. Again very uncommon on a rebuilt rifle. Is this rifle totally original as when it left Remington in 1943? No way to be sure, but the odds are better on this rifle than on 98% of the 03A3's you will ever see. Also included in the sale is the original serial numbed shipping carton dated 1961. This rifle is safe to fire as presently cleaned. There are still traces of cosmoline here and there and likely more under the wood. It the next owner chooses to disassemble the rifle, remember not to totally remove the band screws. - C&R
