LOT DETAILS

Antique - Complete original Second Allen Model 1866 Rifles are not that common for a variety of reasons.  They were made in limited numbers for a production rifle, 53,301.  All but the last one made between 1867 and 1869. In addition to those scrapped over the last 150 or so years, many were turned into hunting rifles by shortening the barrel and or stocks. Others were used as trade goods with various Indian tribes.  They were made from original Civil War muskets made in the last years of that war.  Generally they do not have a serial number.  Barrels were left in original bright finish.  Locks and breech blocks were tempered with oil giving them a color somewhat like a dark case color.   This rifle is in excellent antique condition. It looks to be entirely original.  It has its original full length barrel with the caliber reduced form 58 to 50 cal.  The lock is a correct Springfield Civil War lock, dated 1864, with correct center fire hammer added.  The breech block is also correctly dated 1866. Front and rear sight are original.  The rear sight is correctly secured with a 2 pin spanner screw.   The metal is clean with original bright finish overlay-ed with normal age patina.  At worst there are a few very minor spots of light pitting on the metal.  Both the lock and breech block retain a fair amount of color.  The lock works beautifully.  It has a strong hammer spring, holds solidly on both ½ and full cock.  The hammer falls correctly when the trigger is pulled.  Finally the firing pin is in place and moves correctly when the hammer falls. The stock is original and in very fine to excellent condition. It is solid with no cracks or repairs and very few small marks. It has a full profile and shows little sanding.  It retains correct original color.  Original wood finish on this arm was oil.  This stock is dry and hasn't been oiled in many years.  It has not been varnished or had any sealer or other finishes added.  The rifled barrel is excellent given the age.  It retains full complete strong rifling with a few minor marks or very minor pitting.   There is an original rod with the rifle. It doesn't show in the picture but it is correctly threaded at the end in the stock.  Two notes.  This rifle appears to be sound and functional, however given the age and that it was made from an even older rifle, it is sold as a US military collectible. No Guarantee is made that it is safe for live firing.  The second is that yes the patina could be removed to leave a clean bright finish.  This rifle has earned its present patina by surviving over 150 years, leave it there.  Along with the rifle is an original correct bayonet and original scabbard with US marked frog. Bayonet, scabbard and frog are all in very fine condition.
