Belgain Express Double Rifle 405 Winchester Rifle
This is an express rifle with hammer less lock type key lever opening action. It is a really fine example of the gun makers art. Strong, superbly built and still trim and beautiful. From the design it was likely made around 1910. Belgian gun makers often functioned as a team. Different gunsmiths specializing in making particular parts. Action makers, barrel makers and stock makers all to be assembled by a final individual. Much of the records on Belgian gunsmiths was destroyed during WW1 & 2. The rifle features 25 &3/4 inch barrels. Both barrels are marked CAP & Acier Comprime (Compressed Steel) as well as 405W. The lock is marked with the initials CM. The initials CM on the lock would have identified the maker of the lock and likely the individual who built the rifle. This individual remains lost to history. The barrel maker is identified by the letters CAP & the eagle head stamp. Those were the markings of Henri Joseph Cap one of the premier barrel makers located at 62 Jonruelle St in Liege Belgium. Published sources indicate has working career spanned the years 1880 to 1910. The barrels are also marked B.Blindee which stood for Balle Blindee (French) which was used to indicate rifle bores larger than .22 caliber using jacketed bullets. The stamp was used from 1910 to 1968. 10.1 is the metric designation for .405. Wood to metal and metal to metal fit is excellent. The condition is excellent. It retains about 97% original blue and excellent original case color in the receiver. While not completely engraved, look carefully and you will see that the engraving is both intricate and precisely cut. It is centered around the screws and pins in the rifle. There is also fine border checkering at the breach of the barrels and on the top tang and trigger guard. There is also a small gold S inlay marking the rifle safety. The wood is not cracked or repaired. It features excellent quality hand checkering. Mechanical condition is excellent the action locks up tightly with snap and opens correctly. It has an excellent quality Miller single trigger. Miller has been in production since 1920. Both rifled bores are in excellent condition with strong sharp rifling. Rifles of this type were generally built for the African dangerous game hunting. When the last owner acquired the rifle about 3 years ago he had it inspected by a licensed gunsmith. If the buyer wishes the name, business hours and phone number of the gunsmith can be provided for confirmation, The rifle was also test fired by the gunsmith and later used in a successful pig hunt by the last owner. It shoots just fine and was found to be quite accurate. There is an early screw adjustment Weaver 330 scope on the rifle. The scope works well and has a standard cross hair. Given the vintage of the scope it would have been added sometime in the 1930's. - C&R
