LOT DETAILS

This rifle may be a USMC  WW2 Sniper Rifle.  It is at this point undocumented.  Read the description of the rifle and of the scope listed next in this auction and make your own judgment.  At the beginning of WW2 the US Army committed to the O3A4 rifle with Weaver scope.  The USMC was unimpressed.  Prior to the war they had tested and liked the J Unertl 8X target scope.  A small number of specially marked scopes were ordered. A USMC Quartermasters report shows 1750 were delivered prior to Apr 1945.  A possible total of 3500 were made.   Best rifles available in the USMC inventory were  1047 NM & Special Target rifles in inventory.  574 of which were NM rifles.  This rifle has the correct characteristics of a 1938 National match rifle converted to Sniper.  It has serial number 1513457 with a SA 3-38 Star Gauged barrel.  Duel side gas release vents.  NS bolt, blued.  NM bright bolts were blued to reduce glare under combat conditions.    Original A1 stock with drawing number.  Stock S & O marked in the magazine cut off recess. It has a Nation Match butt plate & H marked front lug. The handguard is modified for scope use just as known examples of USMC sniper rifles were done. The original early Unertl scope blocks on the rifle are mounted as they were on the sniper rifles, with the exception of the edges of the butt plate, the metal is clean and free of rust or pitting. It has very fine old looking parkerized finish. Mechanically it is in excellent condition.  The bore has a TE of just less than 1 and ME of 1.5.  The rifling is very strong with some visible wear and pitting ahead of the chamber. The stock assembly is in very fine or for the age excellent condition.  It has an original drawing number on the underside of the butt which was found on 1938 NM rifles. There are no cracks or repairs and it fits the rifle well.  It has correct brown color and an old military oil finish.  Since no documentation for USMC use has been located at present, the scope for the rifle is being sold separately and is listed next in the order of sale. This rifle and many other fine military weapons, bayonets & equipment are all from a large private collection purchased by Bullseye Firearms in New Alexandria Pa.  The collection became available on the death of the owner.  Sadly the remaining family members were unaware of the value of the history of military weapons.  All records pertaining to the history and purchases of the items was discarded prior to the sale. Contact was made with CMP to find if they sold this rifle. CMP did indeed sell it on July 20 of 2001. The surprise being that they sold it as a Grade B
Drill Rifle with no other details given. Guns deemed not serviceable are sold as drill non firing rifles. While the rifle shows pitting for a few inches in the barrel nothing was showing that seemed likely to render it not serviceable. At which point the rifle was given to a licensed gunsmith who was advised of the CMP letter. He agreed to examine the rifle for safety. The check involved a visual examination of the bore with an optical bore scope, check head space & muzzle crown. A letter from him will accompany the rifle when sold along with the CMP letter. According to him the rifle has excellent head space, with correct resistance when the Go gauge is used and a solid stop occurs when the No-Go is used. Additionally it has no visible muzzle crown issues. There are no safety concerns in his opinion. He was comfortable enough to test fire the rifle. Over open sights at 25 yards it grouped 7 rounds at around 3 inches with the bullets cutting paper square on, not yawing. The group size may be a result of the pitting or of the brand and weight of the bullets used to test the rifle. That is all the information available on the rifle. -C&R
